The Time Has Come! Shipping, Notes and a GIF showing the best way to take apart The Hobby Holder
over 6 years ago – Sat, Jan 06, 2018 at 12:48:27 AM

Hi Friends!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and a happy new year! Other than bagging and organizing this past week, we have been trying to keep warm...

I realize it is as cold or colder where some of you live, but we are not used to this >.<

Address Finalization and Shipping!

So many pretties!
So many pretties!

As you hopefully saw, I sent out a 48 hour notice through BackerKit to make sure your addresses are how they should be for shipping. I am planning on printing packing lists and labels starting this weekend and working over the next two weeks to get everyone's Hobby Holders in the mail. Like I mentioned before I will be sending these out in a rolling style as they are packed for logistical and space reasons. Once they are in the mail, US supporters should be receiving theirs in 3-4 days, and international supporters shortly after they make it through customs is their countries.

Some minor notes on plexi base extenders, caps and tac:

  • The plexi base extenders have a protective paper attached which peels off.
  • The caps have a foam insert that can be removed if you would like.
  • After cutting a portion of the sticky tac into separate tabs, it was going to take way too long, so a majority are shipping still connected. It is all the same amount measured.

The Best Way To Take Apart The Hobby Holder

The nubs on the handle are there to use :D
The nubs on the handle are there to use :D

I thought it would be a good time to share how I remove The Hobby Holder handle from the base! I put The Hobby Holder between my middle and pointer fingers, hold the handle nubs with my thumb, pull the handle to the side and off it pops! You can also just pull them, but this makes it a lot easier :D

Working from Justin's amazing artwork I shared in the last update, Adler at 3eight Interactive has done a spectacular job bringing the Xacto Rogue, Emissary for The Order of the Miniature to life! Maybe these will be a nice little box-set someday :D

The Hobby Holders Are Here! The Order of the Miniature Gets a New Member :O
over 6 years ago – Sat, Dec 23, 2017 at 12:52:50 AM

Hi Friends!

We have gotten SO MANY boxes this week! The Hobby Holder parts arrived over 5 days as the various colors finished running. At an average mold time of 37.5 seconds, the 12200 Hobby Holder pieces took approximately 127 hours STRAIGHT on the injection molder. That doesn't even include the time it took for each of the fill sprues to be manually chopped off! HUGE thanks and shout out ProtoLabs and my rep Evan for managing this crazy order! Can't beat 10-day parts turn around on even this many pieces :D

Here are The Hobby Holders in the order they were unlocked...

Introducing The Xacto Rogue!

I had so much fun with The Miniature Knight I decided to have the talented Justin illustrate another member of The Order of the Miniature. This time we have The Xacto Rogue, Emissary for The Order of the Miniature.

As a side note, I'm thinking about getting The Order of the Miniature T-shirts made with the button image. I had one done to wear at PAX Unplugged, and I thought it looked great. Maybe there will be two options—one for each illustration.

The Storm Before the Storm?

In between various Christmas related activities I am working on getting everything organized, so as soon as the holiday parties have stopped, I can jump right into packing. To help with that, I am also taking a week off from my full-time job to dedicate to getting Hobby Holders in the mail.

Our garage has been taken over with bubble mailers and Hobby Holders :O

Manufacturing Progress, Button Reveal and The Miniature Knight Sculpt is Done!
over 6 years ago – Thu, Dec 14, 2017 at 12:17:34 AM

Hi Friends!

I was going into this week thinking it had been forever since I talked to ya'll... It has only been 11 days >.< Although this was the longest I have gone, since Oct 1, without sending out an update :O Well here it is now, and I have some fun stuff to share!

---

Let's jump to the big news first!

11,800 Hobby Holder Parts Arrive Next Week!

Just in time for my birthday! That is 6000 Bases and 5800 Handles :D Just to share the full impact this campaign has had on my original goal you all blew away in 55 hours... the plan was to order about 750 Hobby Holders to fulfill all the orders needed. There are now over 4700 ordered! Every time I place an order for another piece of our puzzle I am filled with gratitude for your trust, enthusiasm and support!

This puts us about a week ahead of schedule, so I am hoping to begin packaging the first week of January and do mailings every 2-3 days until all The Hobby Holders are shipped (I don't have room in my basement for 2800 packages). This means that potentially Hobby Holders could be arriving on doorsteps the second week of January instead of closer to February! I hope this is exciting news for everyone.

"The Order of the Miniature" Buttons Arrived!

"A pin, a badge, a button, whatever you call it in your country" -Watch It Paint It

At no point in my life did I think I would ever order over 3000 buttons... I think they look really great, and The Miniature Knight seems to have turned into my mascot :D Justin, the artist, is currently working on a stealthy ally for him ;)

Speaking of The Miniature Knight...

The Miniature Knight Sculpt is Complete :D

The Standard Bearer for The Order of the Miniature
The Standard Bearer for The Order of the Miniature

Adler from 3eight Interactive did an awesome job on this sculpt, and I am very pleased with the results. I can't wait to get it printed out and maybe cast them! It was really fun watching him sculpt on Twitch in real time. You can watch the archived steam here for now, and I will be making a time lapse of the process soon as well.

---

If you haven't already, be sure to follow The Hobby Holder on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/hobbyholder/ where I post videos (like this "unboxing" one by Watch It Paint It) and photos in between updates.

That is everything I have for now! Back to putting bottle caps and strips of blue tac into small ziplock bags...

Thanks so much for your amazing support!

Copper Color Sample, 1 Day Left For Surveys and More Painting Videos!
over 6 years ago – Sun, Dec 03, 2017 at 12:39:43 AM

Hi friends!

I hope you are all having a good weekend so far :D I am continuing to get things in order and now that the sticky tak arrived I can finish up bagging the "Hit the Ground Running" goodies. This will make it a lot smoother when the Hobby Holders arrive.

Yea that is a muffin pan... so what.

Copper Sample and Injection Mold Modification

I received a new box of samples from Proto Labs that I wanted to share. Enjoy!

When you make the final file for the injection mold you have to take into account the fact that the plastic might shrink or expand. I played it safe with the original file then decided to increase the diameter of the neck on the base of The Hobby Holder by about .3mm when the first samples arrived. You wouldn't think that would make a difference but it did, and the final production samples are awesome! I am so excited for everyone to try them out :D

1 Day Left to Finalize Your Surveys!

I will be closing the surveys on Monday around 10 a.m. EST. This gives you a little over a day to finalize your responses. You will be able to adjust your addresses up until we move into the Preparing for Shipment phase however.

If you haven't received your survey or if you need to find your link, visit https://hobbyholder.backerkit.com/ and insert your email address.

New Painting Videos UNLOCKED - ZERO and Wendigo

Thanks to the new backers who made it to the party via the Late Pledge form, I am unlocking two new painting videos to add to the list; Industria Mechanika's ZERO and Arena Rex's Wendigo  :D

Industria Mechanika's ZERO
Industria Mechanika's ZERO

I have been eyeballing the models at Industria Mechanika ever since I saw this One Day Build by Adam Savage. I loved the concept of ZERO by Mitutake Nishimua and I was finally able to pick him up not too long ago. This will be an interesting build and paint to video because of the scale; I assume I will be breaking out my 120mm base again :D

Arena Rex's Wendigo
Arena Rex's Wendigo

I actually just picked this model up while at PAX Unplugged. I was initially drawn in because Arena Rex's display miniatures were BEAUTIFULLY painted, but the game looks pretty cool as well. They have a lot of slick minis, but this guy took the cake for me. Their interpretation of the Wendigo is awesome and I can't wait to paint it :D

I hope you all like the new additions!

---

That's it for now :D Have a wonderful rest of the weekend. Thanks so much for your continued support!

You better be good... #Krumpus! Plus a custom mini sculpt in the future?!
over 6 years ago – Tue, Nov 28, 2017 at 11:56:32 PM

Hi Friends!

I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful weekend and you got to play all of those games you haven't been able to play yet! In between all the Thanksgiving dinners and my older son's 3rd birthday I have been doing a lot of planning, and I am beginning to package all of the Hit the Ground Running stretch goal bags.

I am now at 500/2800 bags. Getting a lot of audiobook time in ;)

Everything is piled in my basement except the sticky tak which should be arriving this week. And of course the Hobby Holders.

Surveys Close December 4th :O

I am aiming to place the order next Wednesday. This means we have less than a week (6 days) before the surveys close so that I can make this happen. There are about 180 people who have yet to finalize their pledges, if you are one, please make sure you have it in on time! Like I said previously, this will be the last time I can guarantee all the colors will be available to order (I will have spares in case of lost or broken packages). I will be selecting the top few colors to continue as retail stock items for pre-ordering.

Now that the business is out of the way here is the fun stuff!

I am going to touch up the base when it drys some more...

He took about 1.5 hours and I sped the video to 6x. He was a fun quick paint, and I hope you enjoyed watching!

If you want more Hobby Holder videos while I work on my list, Ben and his team have been using a prototype to paint some Monster Slaughter figures over at Watch It Paint It.

A Fun Development - Custom Mini Sculpt!

I decided that the miniature in the Hobby Holder advertising should be a special miniature exclusive to The Hobby Holder, so what better miniature than The Miniature Knight from The Order of the Miniature! I have asked Adler Romero of Eagle3D to produce a custom sculpt which he will begin streaming on his Twitch channel later today. I will post a comment here and on the main page about an hour before it starts!

To check out some of Adler's work his details are below.
Instagram - eagle_3d  |  Twitter - eagle3ddesigns  |  Tumblr - eagle-3d  |  Youtube - eagle3d

I am really excited for this new development, and I am hoping to have these produced in resin or hard plastic and available in the future :D
